Well it's the end of October and all I can say is WOW! time sure does fly. October has been a very busy month in library. We have been learning about finding and retrieving information and we have also been reading very good books. The students are actively participating in the various book award programs, and I am pleased to see the rise in enthusiasm for reading. YEAH BUDLONG!!!! Please ask your child to tell you about some of the books we have been reading in library.
In November, we will be celebraring Children's Book Week, where we will read from several of our favorite authors. We will also learn about the meaning of Thanksgiving and we will research how the holiday has changed over the years.
Also in November, we will be holding our book fair where students will be able to purchase some of their favorite books. I will be having preview days the first week of November. Book fair is a great time to stock up on some great books at very reasonable prices, and it's a great way to support our library program. Proceeds from the book fair will be used to purchase books and materials for the library. So please help us out and come on in and buy a book. The book fair will be held from 11/9 thru 11/19 in room 116 (the old library). If you need help finding that perfect book, please let me know. I will be more than happy to help you.
Have a happy, and safe Halloween, and Thanksgiving, and thank you for all of your continued support of Budlong's library program.

SEPTEMBER 2010
Wow! Can you believe the first month of school is already over! Time sure does fly. Here in library we have been very busy. Our younger students have been re-learning the process of book checkout, and they have been doing a fabulous job. We have also read several Monarch Award nominees, so ask your children some of the stories we have read in library.
Our middle schoolers have been working on reviewing old library skills, and we have been talking about some of the book award contests that are relevant to them.(ie:Blue Stem and Caudill)They are also checking out books weekly, and I have to say that we some very enthusiastic readers here at Budlong.
I would also like to take this opportunity to thank my parent volunteers for their help in supporting our library program. Budlong definitely has some of the greatest parents! Thank you!!!!
Finally, if you have any questions regarding our library program please let me know. Your imput is greatly appreciated. The best way to reach me is by email mrmarkovic@cps.edu.

Welcome
Welcome to another fun and exciting year at Budlong Elementary. I have been working hard in the library this summer to make sure that the students will get the most out of their library time. In addition to finishing the Herculean task of moving into the new library in room 114, I have also added many new and exciting books to our wonderful book collection. Our students will have access to exceptional books thanks to some grant money, generous donations, and profits from our very successful book fairs.
Also new this year, Budlong will be participating in several literature award programs, such as the Monarch, Bluestem, and Rebecca Caudill Awards. Students will read many of the nominees and will vote on their favorites sometime this winter. I have attached the book lists onto this page, so that you can encourage your child to read these books at home as well.
Speaking of reading, I would like to once again stress the importance of reading in the development of your child. It is recommended that children read, or are read to, for at least 15-20 minutes each day, in addition to any reading done during the school day. Reading with your child helps them develop their vocabulary and fluency skills, which are critical for their academic growth.
Finally, I am looking for some parent volunteers in the library. I am flexible about time and I can work around schedules. If you are interested please let me know either by e-mail mrmarkovic.cps.edu, or you can send a note with your child. Thank you for your continued support of our library program here at Budlong. It is a pleasure working with your children.
Sincerely,
Marija Markovic - School Librarian
